Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (/ˈbdən/ BY-dən; born November 20, 1942) is an American politician and president-elect of the United States. After defeating incumbent Donald Trump in the 2020 United States presidential election, he will be inaugurated as the 46th president in January 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Biden previously served as the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017 and United States Senatorfor Delaware from 1973 to 2009.

Family and local supporters of Mr. Biden gathered in Market Square in Ballina to celebrate his victory in the presidential election.


He may be five generations removed, but the president-elect is a hometown boy in Ballina, Ireland.

The Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, has congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election, while his predecessor, Malcolm Turnbull, succinctly declared “what a relief”.

Morrison on Sunday morning local time said he looked forward to coordinating with the new Biden administration on Covid-19 and on technologies to reduce “global” emissions.
