An argument between brother and sister Uli and Elisabeth opens Brigitte Reimann’s Siblings, published for an English audience for the first time. Narrated by Elisabeth, we learn that when they’d “argued in the past, he’d thrown shoes at me and once even a vase”.

Now, hot-headed temper has yielded to a “cold, dry calm”. It’s 1960 in East Germany, and Uli looks set to follow older brother Konrad in defecting to the West. For Elisabeth, an artist who believes in the socialist dream of the GDR, Uli’s betrayal is personal and political. Domestic turmoil is filtered through the evils of capitalism, communism, democracy, and totalitarian government.

Children blame their parents (who voted for Hitler) for the mess they’ve inherited. Elisabeth sharply rebukes capitalist exploitation, but when her work receives unwanted attention from the Stasi, an ever-narrowing “Party line” draws political idealism and artistic freedom into conflict. This fascinating autobiographical novel, sensitively translated by Lucy Jones, takes a literary star from behind the Iron Curtain and puts her centre stage.

Is The Pope's Exorcist based on a true story?

Not exactly. While it was inspired by a real person and his work as an exorcist, the movie doesn't depict any specific cases that the real Father Gabriele Amorth focused on. Instead, the filmmakers took bits and pieces from Father Amorth's notes and memoirs and used them to inspire the entirely fictional storyline around which the movie unfolds. In this way, it is similar to the films in The Conjuring series, especially some of the spin-offs that followed the 2013 horror hit. That's not to say The Pope's Exorcist doesn't reference a few actual historical events, as we'll detail below, but even the way it describes those events is significantly fictionalized to fit the movie's narrative.

What is an exorcism?

In Father Gabriele Amorth's own words, "An exorcism is a prayer said in Jesus' name to cast out demons. And so it is the strength of the name of Jesus which gives the power to cast out demons." An exorcist is most commonly a Catholic priest who has been authorized by their bishop to perform the rite of exorcism. You never appreciate what a compost your memory is until you start trying to smooth past events into a logical and rational sequence. Everything I wrote was struggle against the impossibility of writing, attempts to preserve something of the escape or perhaps to rediscover the wall of the cosmos and our small place within it.

In the middle of the journey of our life, when we begin to start to feel the weight of the crimes we are hauling behind us, we might turn to literature for wisdom. It is not readily available, but I have always found it in Leo Tolstoy and his War & Peace. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism? Because they will eventually come for you. That’s why. The loser like me is strong because he has nothing left to lose. People who are life’s winners, apparently, are weak because they have so much they want to hang on to. The upwardly mobile are particularly afraid. We are afraid of losing what we have attained, because it is not secure. neither morally nor financially. There are events in seemingly far away places that have significance way beyond their immediate implications. Every story starts with water ... and the Morava River keeps our Cold War past alive. Lives are like rivers. Eventually they go where they must, not where we want them to. It is said that before entering the sea a river trembles with fear. . . But there is no other way. The river can not go back.
