Tony O'Riodan introduced me to the humble Allan Brewster back in 2003 ... The Media was a year old?..

Nickname "Punky" after the television show Punky Brewster

The people who are most mourned are not the richest or the most famous, or the most successful. They are people who enhanced the lives of others. They were kind. They were loving. They had a sense of their responsibilities. When they could, they gave to charitable causes. If they could not give money, they gave time. They were loyal friends and committed members of communities. They were people you could count on... Alan was one of these people when he was working ... When he retired he withdrew from society as a single man he spent time in his boat more and more alone. Gregarious by nature, during his time in retirement Alan became lonely and withdrawn ...

Sadly, as more people live on their own, a growing number are dying unnoticed and unloved with neither friends nor family at the funeral ...

There are a growing number of people like Allan who die with no friends or family to notice. Some have alcohol problems and find themselves detached from the world. Sometimes there is no explanation: they have simply sunk without trace.

In the middle of the journey of our life, when we begin to start to feel the weight of the crimes we are hauling behind us, we might turn to literature for wisdom. It is not readily available, but I have always found it in Leo Tolstoy and his War & Peace. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism? Because they will eventually come for you. That’s why. The loser like me is strong because he has nothing left to lose. People who are life’s winners, apparently, are weak because they have so much they want to hang on to. The upwardly mobile are particularly afraid. We are afraid of losing what we have attained, because it is not secure. neither morally nor financially. There are events in seemingly far away places that have significance way beyond their immediate implications. Every story starts with water ... and the Morava River keeps our Cold War past alive. Lives are like rivers. Eventually they go where they must, not where we want them to. It is said that before entering the sea a river trembles with fear. . . But there is no other way.
