The Lucky Country: yes, I’m aware of the ironies in Horne’s title....

As luck would have it
NIELS Bohr, the great physicist, was asked whether he really believed that the horseshoe hanging over his door would bring him luck. "Of course not," he replied. "But I’m told it works if you don’t believe in it."
It’s an interesting notion, luck. When Napoleon was of a mind to promote an officer, he’d check his CV, listen to representations about the candidate’s bravery and, finally, ask an all-important question:
