Havoc of Haberfield

Catarina’s Haberfield

The suburb was developed in the early 1900s. It was to be “slum-less, lane-less and pub-less”. With wide tree lined streets, houses were built according to strict guidelines. They were to be single story, set back from the road with low front and side fences to promote a sense of community.
The entire suburb is heritage-listed (O’Haberfield) as a Conservation Area and is part of the Register of the National Estate of Australia.
Six kilometres west of the CBD, it was one of the last parts of the inner west to be developed. In 1901, health-conscious entrepreneur Richard Stanton, who was determined this part of Sydney would be “slumless, laneless and publess”, bought the land.
The idea was to provide liveable spaces free from the industrial revolution. With no industrial zones, Haberfield was a step ahead.
