La Perouse is an area of special indigenous significance. By 1895, there was an Aboriginal reserve in La Perouse as well as Aboriginal missions. Yarra Bay House, now owned by the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council was originally part of a telegraph cable communication station and later a series of children’s homes.
