Inflation: how financial speculation is making the global food price crisis worse

“Artificial intelligence is to intelligence, what artificial flowers are to flowers”

We are conditioned to expect spin from our elected representatives, now it comes from the executive branch too.

Informed for the first time by POLITICO that he had been the subject of a secret investigation, Rex Patrick, the Australian senator, said he found the practice “outrageous.”

ZDNET These file types are the ones most commonly used by hackers to hide their malware

ZDNET: “…ZIP and RAR files have overtaken Office documents as the file most commonly used by cyber criminals to deliver malware, according to an analysis of real-world cyber attacks and data collected from millions of PCs.  The research, based on customer data by HP Wolf Security, found in the period between July and September this year, 42% of attempts at delivering malware attacks used archive file formats, including ZIP and RAR. That means cyber attacks attempting to exploit ZIP and RAR formats are more common than those which attempt to deliver malware using Microsoft Office documents like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel files, which have long been the preferred method of luring victims into downloading malware. According to researchers, this marks the first time in over three years that archive files have surpassed Microsoft Office files as the most common means of delivering malware…”

For 2023, which tech tools might help your firm flourish? – Nicole L. Black’s actionable checklist begins with an end of year review of your law firm’s achievements and challenges to determine issues and new requirements moving forward. The review will include conducting an audit of your workflow and technology to identify process gaps and ensure efficiency and profitability in the new year. Over the last two decades I have spent quite a lot of time tackling the issue of corruption. Tackling tax evasion has always been a theme of my work on tax justice. Only yesterday I took part in a meeting in Chile (via Zoom, of course) discussing how better appraisal of tax gaps can help focus resources on tackling this issue.

Carlos Kepke, Indicted Tax Lawyer Allegedly Enabling Large Tax Evasion Offshore Schemes, Dies Just Before Start of Criminal Trial

I have blogged on the prosecution of Carlos Kepke, a Houston lawyer, who was prosecuted as an enabler of offshore tax evasion for Robert Brockman and Robert F. Smith.  Kepke was set to go to trial in San Francisco on tax crimes charges.  He died over the weekend.  See  David Voreacos & Neil Weinberg, Lawyer Charged in Billionaire Tax Case Dies on Eve of Trial (2)(Bloomberg, here.

The earlier blogs on the progress of Kepke’s prosecution may be viewed here.  (Note that this link brings up blogs referring to Kepke in relevance order (with most references first), but a link can be clicked to show the blogs in reverse chronological order.)
