FTC releases new data on romance fraud
  • Reported losses of $547 million in 2021; up 80% from prior year
  • Losses of $1.5 billion in the last five years; highest losses of any fraud category
  • More than 1/3 say it started on Facebook or Instagram
  • $139 million lost in crypto, showing increase in investment scams; 18% of victims involved in investment scam
  • Big increase in scams involving those 18-29
