Went to See the Gypsy With F, J & N

“Happiness consists of living each day as if it were the first day of your honeymoon and the last day of your vacation.”

– Leo Tolstoy

I agree with my mate Leo: As we all need a six month vacation, twice a year ...

Potts Point foodies have countless cafes to choose from, but Gypsy Espresso's snug outfitting, consistent coffee and first-name service are why locals continue to return, daily.

Owners Will Smallbone and Mario Szucs refurbished the former Toby's Estate cafe with industrial-style fittings in 2012. They decided on the name because both of them have a nomadic past. Szucs is from a small Hungarian village. UK-born Smallbone lived in NZ before moving to Sydney with his hospitality-industry family.

Beans are roasted at Gypsy’s headquarters and coffee school in Alexandria. The house blend consists of South American beans and features notes of chocolate, caramel and berry tartness. Single origins rotate weekly. Gypsy also supplies to a number of popular Sydney cafes.

GYPSY ESPRESSO POTTS POINT

In Short: Gypsy Espresso is a cute little cafe that sits just off Macleay St in Potts Point. They roast their own beans featuring great blends and rotating single origin coffees. Be sure to look at their specials board before ordering because we tasted some truly tasty dishes. Sandwiches stacked with Gruyere and Provolone deliver the goods.

Potts Point is not wanting for great dining options. It’s that embarrassment of riches which has created well defined tiers of food offerings. Cafes like Room Ten and Gypsy Espresso offer menus that are accessible, and eschew grandiose garnishes, instead placing a refreshing emphasis on quality at a very reasonable price point. In fact, you can dine in and walk out with change from $20 which includes a cup of Gypsy’s outstanding coffee.

Gypsy Espresso was a recommendation from a fellow photographer buddy Brendan, and I couldn’t wait to sample one of their Single Origin Coffees which was hand made using a pour over method. I really appreciated the fruitiness of the filter coffee, with a light mouth feel. A great primer to a beautiful morning with family and friends.
