Filicudi : Why Write ✍️

I have the ability to create and be in touch with God. I can't change bread and wine into body and blood, but I can take the scum or the slime of the earth and make it into a man or woman.

— J. F. Powers, born in 1917

Licensed & BYO (wine only) Named after one of the islands of the Aeolian archipelago off the coast of Sicily, Filicudi Restaurant has been serving traditional Italian fare in Five Dock since 1979. A community favourite and neighbourhood gem, stunning Italian dishes such as penne granchio with blue swimmer crab and home-made gnocchi with rich beef ragu is from owner Maria Carbone’s family recipe. With the ceiling covered in hanging Chianti bottles, and a myriad of faded posters of the Italian countryside, a night dining will transport you to a humble family dining table in Italy.

Twenty years worth of empty Chianti bottles are hanging from the ceiling. Faded blue posters selling picturesque Italian islands are on the walls. In the kitchen there are two nonnas and three pots of bubbling, crimson sauce. This is Filicudi, Five Dock’s 37-year-old Italian darling.

TS Eliot: After The Waste Land review: how the author found happiness - New Statesman

As in this book’s 2015 companion volume, Young Eliot: From St Louis to The Waste Land, Crawford’s work is impeccable. His aim is to give a “close-grained, intimate portrait” of Eliot from after the publication of The Waste Land in 1922 to his death in 1965. In the years following his modernist masterwork, TS Eliot would become one of the most influential artists of all time, “his poetry – whether in the original or in its many translations – having become a detectable presence in literatures as different as Gaelic, Greek and Chinese”
