Politics Us and Them

While Davis is decreeing hard times for everyone else, however, the top echelons of state government -- the Legislature, the governor's own office, Cabinet secretaries and separately elected officials -- are planning, at most, only token reductions, and some are actually increasing spending. There's not a lot of money involved, at least relatively, but if the politicians want the public to swallow cuts in services and higher taxes on cars, sales and income, they should be setting a more austere example. The do-as-we-say-not-as-we-do attitude is one of many oddities and contradictions within the state's historic budget crisis.
