The Australian Taxation Office’s chief operating officer, Jacqui Curtis, has been appointed to be the next Australian Public Service Commissioner.
She replaces Gordon de Brouwer, who retired from the role in February.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Public Service Minister Katy Gallagher jointly issued a statement on Thursday (14 May) to announce the appointment.
“Ms Curtis is a senior leader in the Australian Public Service and brings extensive experience to the role,” they said.
The incoming APS Commissioner has held the role of COO at the ATO since 2016.
Since 2019, Ms Curtis has also held the whole-of-APS role of APS Head of Profession for Human Resources, with responsibility for lifting professionalism, capability and ethical standards at system scale.
She joined the tax office in 2013 as Deputy Commissioner, ATO People, and was responsible for delivering an enterprise-wide human resource management service.
Before joining the ATO, Ms Curtis was general manager of the People Capability Division at the former Department of Human Services.
She was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2022 for outstanding public service in driving change and building capability in the APS as the inaugural Head of the APS Human Resources Profession.
Ms Curtis holds an Executive Master in Public Administration from the Australian National University.
Her five-year term as APS Commissioner will commence on 9 June.
“We would like to thank Dr Gordon de Brouwer PSM for his service and leadership as Commissioner. We would also like to thank Dr Subho Banerjee for acting as Commissioner since February 2026,” the PM and Senator Gallagher said.
The integration of artificial intelligence across APS agencies will be an immediate and challenging focus for the new Commissioner.
