Berejiklian's dating disaster took her to a special kind of hell but might not leave her there

Thanks to John Hatton, Clover Moore, Peter McDonald and late Ted Mack ... Whatever your view on Gladys right now, understand that without a State ICAC, we would never have known about it. One can only imagine what we don't know about our Federal Government right now...

ICAC’s Operation Keppel has heard evidence over the past three weeks that Mr Maguire was between 2012 to 2018 secretly using his position as an MP to tout for business.

There are dodgy ex-boyfriends, and then there are corruption inquiry-entangled ex-boyfriends.

On Monday the people of NSW learnt Premier Gladys Berejiklian, a leader known for her no-nonsense style and aura of competence, has one of the latter and his entanglement has entangled her too.

"I’m a very private person," said the Premier, in the stand at the Independent Commission Against Corruption, which is looking into the dealings of disgraced former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire.

"I didn’t feel the relationship had sufficient substance to be made public."

The Premier mightn’t have, but the ICAC sure did. And boy, was it made public.

A pandemic is bad news, yes, but the sickening knowledge that your conversations with your ex have been secretly recorded by the state’s anti-corruption watchdog? That is its own special kind of hell.

Particularly when those conversations are used to show your ex-boyfriend is a braggart and a borderline grifter, always involved in deal-making and petty spivvery, yet also, somehow, crying poor and hoping he’ll get a big tax return in order to clear his debts.

"I can’t tell you what I felt," the Premier said on learning that her then-boyfriend was being investigated by the ICAC. "Beyond shocked. Shocked, disgusted, let down. All of the above."

Whether Berejiklian should have been so shocked will be a matter of intense debate in coming days.

It will be the ultimate factor in whether she will keep her job.
