The Many Meanings of The Ides of March & His and Hers ... In the middle of March Media Dragon has acquired a cheeky piece of photography by Natasha Murray (Tash) who is an emerging documentary/art photographer who lives and works in Sydney. Falling on the 15th of March, May, July, and October, or the 13th day of any other month, the ides signified the middle of the month on the Roman calendar. But Media Dragon is guessing that’s not the only context that you’ve heard it in before.

The Plastic People of the Universe will perform their rock suite The Passion Plays with the Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of Pardubice and special guest Filip Topol, formerly of the Czech group Psí Vojáci, during a special one-night concert at Archa that will bring the Czech underground out from, well, underground. In the middle of the journey of our life, when we begin to start to feel the weight of the crimes we are hauling behind us, we might turn to literature for wisdom. It is not readily available, but I have always found it in Leo Tolstoy and his War & Peace. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism? Because they will eventually come for you. That’s why. The loser like me is strong because he has nothing left to lose. People who are life’s winners, apparently, are weak because they have so much they want to hang on to. The upwardly mobile are particularly afraid. We are afraid of losing what we have attained, because it is not secure. neither morally nor financially. There are events in seemingly far away places that have significance way beyond their immediate implications. Every story starts with water ... and the Morava River keeps our Cold War past alive. Lives are like rivers. Eventually they go where they must, not where we want them to. It is said that before entering the sea a river trembles with fear. . . But there is no other way.
