The editorial page of the Los Angeles Times is the closest thing the newspaper has to a private club. For decades it perfected a civic-minded solemnity and exuded a wood-paneled, gin-and-bitters ambience, a feeling that modesty and politesse were the essential tone—which was true in a town where decisions were made out of view by modest and polite patricians who, naturellement, looked after the city’s interests.
