In a country already on edge, the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has enraged his supporters, paused the Democratic campaign and raised fears of further political violence in the run-up to November's election.
- The FBI named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspected shooter behind the apparent assassination attempt. Law enforcement officials told AP that bomb-making materials were found inside the vehicle of the suspect and inside his home.
- The man who was killed at the rally was identified as Corey Comperatore. The former fire chief from the area “dove on his family to protect them,” his wife told Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. State police have identified two people who were critically injured — both adult males — but didn’t release names at a news briefing early Sunday.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be assassin who shot Donald Trump, has been pictured for the first time just hours after he was shot and killed by the Secret Service.
Sarah D’Angelo, a former classmate of Trump shooting suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks at Bethel Park High in Pennsylvania, said Crooks had not broadcast any strong political views in school.

Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania was identified by the FBI as the man responsible for shooting Trump and numerous rally attendees in Butler, Pa. The shooter’s car was parked near Trump’s rally, and police dispatched bomb technicians after receiving multiple reports of suspicious packages, the Wall Street Journal first reported.
“The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania. This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the FBI said in a statement.
Explosives were also found in Crooks’s home, CNN reported.

“He never outwardly spoke about his political views or how much he hated Trump or anything,” she said in an interview Sunday morning. D’Angelo, who graduated from the same high school as Crooks in 2022 said he had “a few friends,” but “didn’t have a whole friend group.” She recalled him playing games on his laptop during homeroom before the school day began.
