Marine Rescue NSW volunteers assist search for missing swimmer off Little Bay Beach

Bringing closure for a family of a drowning victim

 

About 11am last Monday (25 May 2026), emergency services were called to Little Bay Beach, Little Bay, following reports a

30-year-old man was seen in difficulty in the water about 100m offshore.

Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command, along with Marine Area Command, PolAir, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and Westpac Rescue Helicopter, commenced a search to locate the swimmer.

The search was formally suspended the following day (Tuesday 26 May 2026).

Shortly before 8am (Sunday 31 May 2026), the crew of a fishing vessel about two nautical miles east of Little Bay Beach contacted emergency services after sighting a body in the water.

Officers from the Marine Area Command attended the scene where a recovery operation was conducted.

Whilst yet to be formally identified the body is believed to be that of the 30-year-old man.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Body of swimmer who disappeared off Little Bay Beach found 

The crew of a fishing boat spotted the body, believed to be that of a 30-year-old man who vanished while swimming in Sydney’s east, and alerted emergency services.

 Jet skis were among the resources deployed to search for the missing swimmer last week. 

 The body of a swimmer who went missing off Sydney’s eastern suburbs almost a week ago has been found. NSW Police said the crew of a fishing boat had spotted the body in the ocean, about two nautical miles east of Little Bay Beach, and alerted emergency services just before 8am on Sunday. 

The discovery came six days after the 30-year-old man vanished, having last been seen struggling in the water about 100m off the beach about 11am last Monday. 

The search for the missing swimmer was suspended the day after he vanished. 
A multi-agency search ensued in difficult conditions, including heavy rain and large swells, before being suspended the following day. While the body is yet to be formally identified following its recovery on Sunday, police said it was believed to be that of the 30-year-old man. Police will prepare a coronial report.

Volunteers from Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour are assisting a multi-agency search for a missing male swimmer at Little Bay Beach.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Joel Pemberton said vessels and crews were requested to assist by NSW Police Marine Area Command.

“Volunteer crews were assembled and rescue vessels Botany Hacking 30 and Middle Harbour 30 deployed at 12.30pm.

“Both Marine Rescue NSW vessels are working alongside Water Police, searching an area from Little Bay Beach to Cape Banks in the south.

“Sea conditions offshore are unfavourable, with a 3 to 5 metre south-east rolling swell.

“Marine Rescue NSW volunteers and vessels will continue searching until instructed otherwise by Marine Area Command,” Inspector Pemberton said.
