OSINT Tools and More

"Today, it might be that, you know, Donald Trump thinks he can take over the election system through one of his executive orders. Tomorrow maybe it's the banking system. After that, maybe it's contracts. Maybe he decrees, 'I'm gonna decide which contracts are binding and which contracts aren't binding.' So, the legal system is fundamental to how our society operates, how capitalism operates, and everyone should have a stake in

that."

~ Marc Elias, a prominent lawyer for the Democratic Party whom President Trump has targeted by name in his campaign against big law firms, on "60 Minutes." Trump drew further concern when, during an interview on "Meet the Press" that aired on Sunday, he repeatedly said "I don't know" when asked if he needed to uphold the Constitution and guarantee the right of due process.

Which cities have the most trees? See how yours stacks up.

Washington Post [no paywall] “I decided to find out whether it’s luck or careful planning that is responsible for D.C.’s impressive urban forest

Researchers at the Arbor Day Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service and forestry consultancy PlanIT Geo have mapped tree cover across all urban areas in the country using aerial imagery and artificial intelligence. Their computer model analyzes patterns in color, shape or shadowing to detect tree crowns.

The maps allow us to see what the most forested places in the U.S. have in common. Zooming in on a few different examples, the first thing you’ll notice is that tree cover depends heavily on the local climate…”

OSINT Tools and More – Editor’s note: Happy fifth anniversary to Jeremy Caplan’s excellent Wonder Tools Substack newsletter. He started his newsletter a couple of months before I launched the Toolbox newsletter. If you’re not subscribing, you should!. I took a fact-checking and OSINT tools course from the Knight Center for the Americas last month.

It was co-taught by ProPublica’s Craig Silverman, who pretty much wrote the book on this topic. JournalistsToolbox.ai is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Silverman held an open “office hours” on Zoom last month and shared some great OSINT tools, as well as places you can find more.

You can subscribe for free to his newsletter for more tools, and, of course, check the Journalist’s Toolbox Investigative and Fact-Checking pages.” [Note – free and fee based sites are in the list below]
