Hidden Gem: Where Czech Darina serves great coffee and food - However Wiley is a tidal pool so during big seas and high tides Swimmers At Wiley Baths need to be careful as today a woman was washed over the north side of the swimming pool wall … Few days ago woman was taken out of the pool by a huge wave and ended in the ladies only pool 200 meters north of the Wyllie pool. Quote from 2019:
“ I was swimming at Wylies pool on 30 March 2019 when I got picked up by a wave that had swept into the pool and thrown out into the ocean. I was thrown into a shallow area near the cliff rocks and had to fight to stop being bashed into the rocks. I then had to fight my way to the surface and swim away from the rocks out into the deep water. I could see the pool attendants standing by the pool looking my way. I learnt later they were not allowed to put their lives in jeopardy so did not try and swim out to me. At least they had radioed the surf rescue boat at Coogee. About 10 minutes later the boat came past heading out to sea (they had directed it to the wrong area). I waved and attracted their attention and got picked up and taken to Coogee beach. If I was not a strong swimmer I probably would have died. Do not go into the pool at Wylies if there are waves breaking into it or you are prepared to risk your life.”
Wylie’s Baths have their own website, with a history page, so I’m going to link straight to that. My favourite bits of the pool’s history are: that Henry Wylie was an early 20th century long distance swimmer who got permission to dig out a pool on the rock platform here.

“Whenever in my dreams I see the dead, they always appear silent, bothered, strangely depressed, quite unlike their dear, bright selves. I am aware of them, without any astonishment, in surroundings they never visited during their earthly existence, in the house of some friend of mine they never knew. They sit apart, frowning at the floor, as if death were a dark taint, a shameful family secret. It is certainly not then -- not in dreams -- but when one is wide awake, at moments of robust joy and achievement, on the highest terrace of consciousness, that mortality has a chance to peer beyond its own limits, from the mast, from the past and its castle tower.
