A bestselling novel was pulled from a French literary prize after AI accusations – what next?

The most successful opera in the history of Opera Australia’s harbourside event will return in 2027, with Verdi’s epic Aida playing at Mrs Macquaries Point from 27 March to 25 April.

The opera "Aida" is a play characterized by a grand narrative and lyrical aria in which war, love, and fate intersect. Since its premiere at the Royal Opera House in Cairo, Egypt in 1871, it is considered an indispensable masterpiece in the history of operas around the world.

The main frame of this play is the love and conflict of the three characters, Aida, Radames, and Amneris. The story of Radames, who conflicts between duty to his country and personal love, Aida, who agonizes between love and identity, and Amneris, who suffers from jealousy and love, gradually descends into catastrophe in political and personal conflicts. Radames is driven into a traitor and sentenced to live burial, and Aida chooses to die with him, tragically revealing the universal themes of love, power and fate.

The 'Triumpal March' in Act 2 is especially considered the highlight of 'Aida'. As soon as the Egyptian military returns with the spoils after winning the battle against Ethiopia, a spectacular march of improvement is staged with a combination of grand processions and magnificent music.

Friday essay: The Catcher in the Rye is 75 – and every time I meet Holden Caulfield, I see him anew

Today is the feast day of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, known as Little Flower of Jesus:

"A word, a kindly smile, will often suffice to gladden a wounded and sorrowful heart."

“The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little violet of its scent...

...nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.”

That’s what some of us finally and reluctantly began to learn twenty-five years ago today. Evil was not a theory or abstraction. There are people in the world who would happily kill us – not for anything we as individuals have done but because we stubbornly persist in our being. We are alive only because they haven’t yet managed to murder us. Chambers was the blackest of pessimists and his pessimism was rooted in his experience as a Communist and a spy for the Soviet Union. He understood the seductive power of nihilism. In his masterpiece Witness (1952) he writes:

“Crime, violence, infamy are not tragedy. Tragedy occurs when a human soul awakes and seeks, in suffering and pain, to free itself from crime, violence, infamy, even at the cost of life. The struggle is the tragedy - not defeat or death. That is why the spectacle of tragedy has always filled men, not with despair, but with a sense of hope and exaltation.”
