NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced a state funeral for Dame Marie Bashir, the first female governor of the state.

Dame Marie served in the role between 2001 and 2014, having previously worked as a clinical psychiatrist.

Mr Minns described Dame Marie as a "an extraordinary Australian".

Speaking at an International Women’s day event in Sydney on Sunday Dame Marie ditched the shackles of her former non-political role.
