Finance has taken over responsibility for mega welfare services agency Services Australia. Central control is back, big time.

One of the biggest synergies to flow will be central agency control of one of the Commonwealth’s biggest IT shops under the umbrella of whole-of-government tech delivery policy.

It will mean that both the Digital Transformation Agency and Services Australia report to Gallagher. This is pivotal for digital identity and coordination of digital citizen services.

It also puts present Services Australia chief executive David Hazlehurst in the running to become the next Finance secretary, a role that remains open

You never appreciate what a compost your memory is until you start trying to smooth past events into a logical and rational sequence. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism?
