You never appreciate what a compost your memory is until you start trying to smooth past events into a logical and rational sequence. I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism? Joseph Epstein penned a story entitled “First Person Singular,” an essay published in The Hudson Review in 1992. It begins: “The best time to write one’s autobiography, surely, is on one’s deathbed.” He identifies “only a handful of splendid autobiographies,” and goes on to identify them:

The more it tells you the less you know... The anthropological folkloric tale is about the strange relationship between a secret and knowledge.
