Labour obliterate Tories with historic election win — exit poll

Keir Starmer on course to be most powerful British prime minister since Tony Blair.

The House of Commons is the main lawmaking body for the United Kingdom, the other being the unelected House of Lords. It consists of 650 members, each of whom is elected by a geographical constituency of roughly equal population.

Keir Starmer is on course to be the UK’s next prime minister after an exit poll put Labour on course for a historic election victory.

According to an exit poll released at 10pm, Labour is projected to win a mammoth 410 seats, putting it on course for a 170 majority. Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party is projected to win just 131 seats and faces the stark prospect of election wipeout across swathes of the country. The Lib Dems are predicted to win 61 and Reform 13.

(Excellent Lette and BBC info-graphics putting the Sunak massacre into context. No other leader in British history has ever lost 236 seats.)

The first handful of the 650 seats up for grabs will likely declare results soon after 11.30pm followed by a steady trickle of results. Between 3am and 5am, hundreds of constituencies will declare who has won with the vast majority of results known by 6am.

This is telling. Labour has not won. The Tories lost and the SNP have lost, whilst Reform and the Greens have won, and the LibDems have been exceedingly organised. But Labour has not won hearts and minds. Not in the slightest.
