KPMG partners depart for growing boutique consultancy

Two KPMG partners have moved to independent global expert services and consulting firm Ankura to launch a practice providing expert witness and legal dispute advisory in Australia.

The pair, Christine Oliver and Greg Meredith, will join Ankura as the partner-equivalent of senior managing director.

They were previously at insolvency firm Ferrier Hodgson before it was acquired by KPMG in 2019. Part of the reason for the move was they were restricted in the clients they could work with because of KPMG’s strict conflict of interest policies around its audit practice.

“The conflicts were a significant issue for us,” Ms Oliver said. “We don’t do annuity-type services like audit at Ankura so there is little scope for conflict here.”

The 37-year-old, who will lead the new disputes and economics practice, provides expert witness services and legal strategy advice on technical matters including complex accounting issues, valuations and economic modelling.

She said there was strong demand for independent experts who could either appear in court on behalf of a client and provide expert reports or advise clients on strategy. Her aim was to hire another senior managing director in the area by the end of the year for the practice.

Mr Meredith provides expert advice on technical business issues including accounting matters and business valuations. He also advises on the “quantification of loss and damage”, a service he said was required in “every commercial litigation”.

Ankura entered the Australian market in 2019and now has six senior managing directors and another 29 staff. The private equity-backed firm has acted as administrator for retailer Kikki K and generates “tens of millions” in Australian revenue, according to Simon Michaels, the UK-based chairman for the firm’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific.

Simon Michaels, the firm’s chairman for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and the Asia Pacific, said the aim was to expand the Australian branch to 50 by the end of the year. Expert witness and legal dispute advisory is one of the firm’s major services at a global level.

In the middle of the journey of our life, when we begin to start to feel the weight of the crimes we are hauling behind us, we might turn to literature for wisdom. It is not readily available, but I have always found it in Leo Tolstoy and his War & Peace. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism?
