Accountant successfully defends against negligent advice claim
The District Court of Western Australia has dismissed a negligent advice claim made against an accountant relating to an arrangement involving the sale of shares to an SMSF.
In the case of Hohnen v Hopkins [2020] WADC 98, the plaintiffs, Mark Hohnen and his wife Catherine Hohnen, sought to claim for loss and damages resulting from advice they claimed was provided by their former accountant, Rick Hopkins, and his in-house accountant, Janis Sawyer.

Feds bust Texas man for using PPP loan of nearly $1 million on cryptocurrency
The Justice Department did not explain how it detected the fraud but a criminal complaint describes a series of curious circumstances. These include Argiries' PPP application, which suggested he would pay 51 Texas Barbecue's employees an average of $90,000 a month.
"Such a high average salary for a barbecue operation raises further suspicion," the complaint reads.
