Greek Luncheon with Irish ☘️ Gannons

Back in Greek years, MM AD, when I joined the taxing working environment I was informed by Antipodean Irish Tony O’R in Brissie “You don’t have to be crazy to work here; we’ll train you.”

We all spend a major time of our life at work. Some of our colleagues, co-workers, comrades, and companions become our friends and good mates in course of time.  Chance makes us colleagues. But the colourful challenges and complex intel made us friends.

The best managers such as Tony, MO’N, Tyson, Mark, BC, MT encourage friendships in the workplace by creating the conditions under which such relationships thrive.”

It was lovely to catch up with MT today at a historical spot. When the Hellenic Club first opened on Elizabeth Street in the late 1950s, it became a meeting place for celebrating and continuing Greek culture in a new country. Peter Conistis first opened his much-loved modern Greek diner Alpha, which was funded by the club, a couple of doors down in 2013, and now, after a multi-million-dollar refurbishment, his cavernous diner is open once again.

The aroma of spit-roasted lamb grilled over charcoal for eight hours draws you in, and the open-kitchen vibes make you feel like a member of the family. In keeping with his heritage, chef Peter Conistis serves up a fresh spin on Greek cuisine.  Aroma of salmon pie and sea food saganaki …

Behind the bar, Conistis’s watermelon 🍉 feta margarita is made with vodka infused with feta cheese Batanga Blanco watermelon,  and chilli, and served on ice cubes made of water melon juice.

There was a time when the rich bragged about how much they paid in taxes In ancient Athens, paying a massive tax bill was a badge of honor.

In Sicily, there’s a dish called “pasta con le sarde a mare”. Rookies up anticipate a few sardines among the fettucine, but don’t be fooled. The meal translates as “pasta with sardines with the sea”. Fennel is there. So too pine nuts, raisins – but not the usual sardines. As the menu implies, those salty treats are swimming freely in “il mare”.

Symbolically, that meal represents our current state of affairs. Call it the COVID effect, the virus indisputable and invisible all in one. I feel like Schrodinger’s cat, that each-way moggy, has been tampering with the zeitgeist, sending every mind into an existential spin.

A new concept that promises to help workers avoid burnout and ditch stressful jobs while remaining gainfully employed is gathering plenty of attention online.

It's called quiet quitting, and a recent video by TikTok creator zkchillin on the topic has already clocked up 2.6 million views.

"You're not outright quitting your job, but you're quitting the idea of going above and beyond," the online content creator explained in the video.
