This is perhaps reflected in the Swedish term for tax, ‘skatt’, being synonymous with ‘treasure’. The politicisation of the public service in the sense of the eclipse of the federal bureaucracy by political advisers has happened in every Westminster system, but it's gone a lot further in Australia than it has in the other Westminster systems. It's gone a lot further than the UK, a lot further than Canada and a lot further than New Zealand. There has been a big hollowing out of the federal bureaucracy in terms of real talent and muscle. It's lost out in terms of remuneration, it's lost out in terms of power, it's lost out in terms of respect and it's lost out in terms of protection of reputation.

It is not readily available, but I have always found it in Leo Tolstoy and his War & Peace. Both Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession demand that readers reflect on what the inevitability of death means to us, and on how we shall face our own end.

I also won’t pretend to understand why in the middle of the night some of the deep and stirring quotes and manifestos came to me. Why do I oppose communism and fascism?
