Eighteen Years Of Observing Trends On Media Dragon

The small things of life were often so much bigger than the great things . . . the trivial pleasure like cooking, one's home, little poems especially sad ones, solitary walks, funny things seen and overheard.
— Barbara Pym, born in 1913

We blog, we tweet, we post to Facebook: Let’s instead savor the art of the essay Washington Post
D.H. Lawrence famously proclaimed that his motto wasn't “art for art's sake, but art for my sake.”

Sydney, Prague, New York And Other Major Cities With The Coolest Bridges (According To Stars) Celebrities have some pretty big opinions and in the case of favorite architectural landmarks, these bridges are on their famous radars

“#LIBREV says library workers make libraries as institutions possible. The COVID-19 crisis has made it clear that it is time to recenter the conversation in our field. Libraries will be necessary and important to their communities as we begin to strategize and recover from this crisis. It’s time to treat library staff as if we are necessary and important, too.
In hopes of building affinity and solidarity among similar groups, and helping like-minded folks find their collective power in this challenging time, we are attempting to continue the momentum built at the May 4, 2020 #LIBREV conference in a different kind of space.
This is an invitation to join us in our online community. It may become something more, but here’s a place to start. Let’s get to work on building a better future together.”

The blogosphere remains a valuable source of information and insight
Last Monday was a significant anniversary in the evolution of the web. It was 25 years to the day since the first serious blog appeared. It was called Scripting News and the url was (and remains) at scripting.com. Its author is a software wizard named Dave Winer, who’s updated it every day since 1994. And despite its wide readership, it has never run ads. This may be partly because Dave doesn’t need the money (he sold his company to Symantec in 1987 for a substantial sum) but it’s mainly because he didn’t want to compete for the attention of his readers. “I see running ads on my blog,” he once wrote, “as picking up loose change that’s fallen out of peoples’ pockets. I want to hit a home run. I’m swinging for the fences. Not picking up litter.

From a social distancing compliant yardage, the almost 1,234,567 blog views sang me a rousing chorus of happy anniversary to Making Yet Another MEdia Dragon ruckus in June ...

Despite it’s best efforts, COVID-19 was unable to affix the ruining of the milestone  to it’s  mammoth collateral damage rap sheet. . .
As this month marks the 18th anniversary of the  MEdia Dragon. It all started in sunny Brivegas back in 2002 to share stories, trends, cultural ironies .... collected at swimming clubs, cinemas, colourful book clubs and inside the taxing antipodean landscapes.
I’m more excited writing the blog now because the more I learn, the more there is to learn! Every new thing leads to another new thing, which leads to another new thing! I can spend days falling down rabbit holes, learning everything I can about puns, words, topics I feel the need to share with the world  . . .

Blogging world introduces us to words like   ‘Fernweh’ — German for wanderlust. The desire to visit far-off places, and feel a strange pang for the places you have never been to, yet. Quite literally, it is the opposite of homesickness, and sometimes is even referred to as ‘farsickness’.

2020 is a year filled many anniversaries, Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, making 2020 the 200th year anniversary of her birth. The “Lady with the Lamp” became the founder of modern nursing and the first woman to receive the Order of Merit. During the Crimean War, Nightingale was put in charge of nursing British and allied soldiers in Turkey. Her time in the wards, especially her night rounds, earned her the nickname “Lady with the Lamp” and helped her begin to formalize nursing  education. She went on to found the first scientifically based nursing school—the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London—in 1860. She also helped institute training for midwives and nurses working in workhouse infirmaries. Nightingale continues to inspire nurses all over the world with her legacy of dedication and innovation. While International Nurses Day commemorates her birthday every year on May 12, the 2020 celebrations will take place year-round and further champion nurses’ work.

This Is The Book That Politicians, Pundits, And Reporters Want Everyone To See On Their Bookshelves

“It is 46 years old, weighs nearly four pounds in paperback and is about as ill-suited for the internet age as they come: The book is not even available for digital readers. And yet, in certain circles, The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York, the 1,246-page tome by Robert Caro, has become a breakout star of the Covid-19 era.” – The New York Times

The Tragedy Of Philosophy

To live is to encounter the tragic — a reality shot through with utter strife, and covered in complete darkness. Despite our best attempts, we are not going to get out of it. For philosophers to overlook, sugarcoat, or rationalize this fact is to deny something essential about who we are and what we might become, both intentionally but also in spite of ourselves. – Los Angeles Review of Books
