A new study from a Gold Coast private university appears to have cracked the code to shedding unwanted kilos.
Bond University’s Dr Hayley O’Neill and Dr Loai Albarqouni found an eight-hour ‘feeding window’ coupled with lower meal frequency and calorie-dense meals for breakfast and lunch proved more effective than traditional methods.
Based on trials involving just under 2500 people, biomedical scientist Dr O’Neill said not only did all three interventions have positive weight loss outcomes, but could also help manage some chronic diseases
“What we found was all three of those interventions have positive weight loss outcomes, ranging from 1.4kg to 1.8kg when implemented for a longer duration beyond 12 weeks,” she said.
“It doesn’t matter what popular diet is it – low carb, paleo, keto – it’s the dietary adherence (the process of following a diet plan) that’s sometimes lacking in terms of long-term sustainability.”
Dr O’Neill said reducing the feeding window allowed test studies to stick to it for longer, resulting in greater results.
“There were some interventions that compared calorie restriction versus a time-restricted eating approach,” she said.
“They actually found that they had greater weight loss outcomes with the feeding window compared to counting calories,” Dr O’Neill said.
The Bond expert said the study showed protein-rich breakfasts such as eggs, scrambled tofu and protein smoothies were ideal as the body was generally sensitive to glucose in the morning.
“For lunch, you want to get your fibre and protein in, so probably recommending 20-30 grams of protein, this will help you feel fuller for longer,” Dr O’Neill said.
“In terms of dinner, I would recommend something a bit lighter whether that be stewed or slow cooked, casseroles or meat dishes or soups.”
