Australia Covid: Seventh city locks down amid vaccine chaos

MYSTERIES ABOUND:  Sudden Shift in COVID-19 Lab Leak Narrative ‘Mysterious’: Evolutionary Biologist.“The sudden shift in narrative over the possibility that COVID-19 could have emerged from a lab in Wuhan, China, is mysterious and contingent to ‘just how corrupt our system has become,’ according to evolutionary biologist Bret Weinstein.”

“While we still have more to learn about the Delta variant, this emerging data is important because it shows us that what we might think of as just a mild winter cold – a runny nose and a sore throat – could be a case of COVID-19.”

If the symptoms are of a mild winter cold, what’s the worry? Everyone at high risk should have been vaccinated by now anyway, and much of the remaining population has already had Covid.

The US Isn’t Ready for Another Pandemic

Jason Kottke   Jul 02, 2021

Olga Khazan writing for The Atlantic:

After an inept coronavirus response, will the United States do better when the next pandemic strikes? Experts generally agree that America learned from the past year, and that the next public-health crisis won’t be quite as bewildering. But America’s pandemic preparedness still has major gaps, some of which are too big for any one administration to fix. In recent weeks, I’ve called back many of the experts I interviewed over the past 18 months about masks, testing, contact tracing, quarantine, and more. I asked them, “Are we ready for another one?” The short answer is “Not quite.” The long answer is that being truly “ready” will be harder than anyone realizes.

The Atlantic: Vaccines are still beating the variants, but the unvaccinated world is being pummeled. “Fifteen months after the novel coronavirus shut down much of the world, the pandemic is still raging. Few experts guessed that by this point, the world would have not one vaccine but many, with 3 billion doses already delivered. At the same time, the coronavirus has evolved into super-transmissible variants that spread more easily. The clash between these variables will define the coming months and seasons. Here, then, are three simple principles to understand how they interact. Each has caveats and nuances, but together, they can serve as a guide to our near-term future…”

Delta variant in the U.S. CDC tracker and map shows where it’s spreading

Fast Company: “The delta variant of the COVID-19 coronavirus has public health officials the world over very worried. That variant, first seen in India and known by its identifier B1617, has now spread to more than 80 countries around the globe and is quickly becoming the dominant strain in the countries it has reached. The reason the delta variant is so worrisome is that it’s both more transmissible than the original and alpha strains of COVID-19 as well as appearing to be somewhat more resistant to all current COVID-19 vaccines on the market. Public health officials in America are particularly worried about the delta variant as it is expected to become the dominant strain in the U.S. by mid-July and is seen as the “greatest threat” to eliminating the virus in the country, reports NBC News. For those concerned about delta’s spread in the U.S., the CDC has an interactive tracker and mapshowing the variant’s current reach. In the two weeks ending May 22, delta made up just 2.8% of all cases in the U.S. But by the two weeks ending June 5, its share jumped to 9.5%. And by the two weeks ending June 19, it’s estimated that delta accounted for 20.6% of all cases…”

Rise of Delta variant brings mask question back, even for the vaccinated

CNN: “Nearly all the staff at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are vaccinated against Covid-19. Yet they are all still wearing masks to work. These researchers, who are among the most well-versed in the tricks of the coronavirus, aren’t taking any chances. They’re advising the rest of the country and the world to be similarly careful as strains like the Delta variant arise and spread. “We still have a masking policy here, particularly in group situations,” Andrew Pekosz, a professor of immunology at Johns Hopkins who is studying the coronavirus, told CNN. “This pandemic isn’t over yet.”…
