Given the amount that James Bond drinks in the works of Ian Fleming, it's a wonder he can find his car keys, let alone save the nation.
Other celebrated Scots to place in the list included Mary Queen of Scots in second place with 9% of votes, Sir Alex Ferguson with 8%, and tennis star Andy Murray and poet Robert Burns both at 5%.
First Minister Alex Salmond came in last place with 3% of votes – a tie with Britain’s Got Talent singer Susan Boyle.
“I suppose he could be compared to a fine single malt – sophisticated, full of flavour, very rich and distinctly Scottish,” commented James Campbell, Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival chairman.
“Sir Sean may be more accustomed to picking up awards and being recognised for his acting, but I hope that he will be delighted with his slightly more unusual honour.

Hollywood immediately started paying tribute to the silver screen legend, remembering him for Bond as well as his other iconic roles and effortless cool.
Other James Bond actors, past and present, were among the first to share their tributes to Connery. Daniel Craig, the current iteration of the secret agent, said: "He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in megawatts; he helped create the modern blockbuster... Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course."
Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond from 1995-2005, called Connery the "greatest James Bond".
"You cast a long shadow of cinematic splendour that will live on forever," he wrote on Instagram. "You led the way for us all who followed in your iconic foot steps. Each man in his turn looked to you with reverence and admiration as we forged ahead with our own interpretations of the role."

Sean Connery, the most iconic James Bond actor, is now having drinks with the Man Upstairs. The acting giant passed away in his sleep overnight in the Bahamas. His loss is tragic, but he lived to the age of 90.
Before his iconic roles as James Bond, Indiana Jones’ father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and more, Connery worked as a milkman, laborer, artist’s model, bodybuilder, and sailor in the British Royal Navy. At the age of 23, he chose acting over becoming a professional soccer player.
Connery pioneered the role of 007 in Dr. No (1962). He embodied the iconic British spy at the height of the Cold War, launching the James Bond series that continues to this day.
In his 1990 book Medium Cool: The Movies of the 1960s, Ethan Mordden wrote of Connery as Bond, “Once in an era there is perfectcasting. Greta Garbo as Ninotchka, Margaret O’Brien as Tootie Smith, Johnny Sheffield as Bomba the Jungle Boy—and Connery as 007.”

1. THE ONE HIGHWAY
Only a few months ago, the Silver City Highway between Broken Hill and Tibooburra remained one of the last two unsealed major roads in NSW. Now, with the final dirt sections of the highway bituminised, a new, safer and more reliable 332-kilometre NSW outback touring route for vehicles of all kinds has been opened up. The highway, named after Broken Hill's nom de plume, extends a further 296 kilometres south to the border of Victoria at Mildura, creating a new gateway to the outback through NSW and near to the Queensland border.
