Madeleine - After the battle, everyone is a general

Government warned on Chinese state involvement in Australian power grid

Madeleine Albright talks books, Aussie friends, China, Trump and more

Is the author and former US secretary of state a one-book-at-a-time person? One the eve of her new book release, she sits down with AFR Magazine for a Q&A.

In I’m Reading column, the former US secretary of state and author touches on the theatre of life, the Obamas’ new TV show for kids and why you need to take your cues from the young.

Madeleine Albright was America’s first female secretary of state. She’s built a successful career in business, teaching, advocacy and writing. In her seventh book, she reflects on working productively in later life.

The interview is peppered with references to Vaclav Havel, and Czech novelists From Klima to Skvorecky to Haลกek.

Ms Albright notes that the West should attach “ prudent limits to our economic reliance on (communist) China and to the sharing of technologies. Above all, we should strive to speak with a common voice” about harsh treatment of Hong Kong and Uighur minorities.

She quoted Miss Marlow, “ There is a great deal of human nature in all of us.”

There is a sweet quote from her mum- it was one of my gradmother’s Katarina’s favourite sayings -  ‘ She had no problems, so she bought a goat.’

Babka Katarina lived in Pilhov Hills without running water few goats ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ and huge land with potatoes  ๐Ÿฅ” she lived on potatoes and goat milk and cheese most of the year. However in Autumn her fruit orchard delivered tons of pears, apples, plumbs - heavenly plumbs - and cheries.

Hay would preserve them for most of the winter. My sisters could only read one or two pieces of her potatoe pizza as the base was potatoe and on top she would slice thin pieces of potatoes with rosemary and goat cheese. Especially, babka’s ghee and schmalet tasted divine on the pizzas ๐Ÿ•
