I was born in the house built on the site of the Black Death Mortuary

Villagers trapped by a life they didn't choose, and had no control over the direction of their East Side Story.

Tucked away in the folds of the ancient mountains that embrace the Kežmarok and Poprad valleys lay a royal town called Vrbov (meaning "willow").

A weeping at times. But mostly happy little village of a few hundred souls with a robust sense of humour. It gets dark early in December.

The Vrbov definition of winter: streets are snowbound, the road is quiet, the mountain air is very, very cold ...

Cemeteries - Vrbov goes back to  1260s and my father after WWI was able to purchase old unused Black Death Mortuary to House his his six children

I don’t know why, but ever since I was a child I have loved churchyards and cemeteries. I find them almost as irresistible to enter as bookshops, and when for some reason I pass one without having entered I feel a sense of missed opportunity. Perhaps it is because, like Pip in Great Expectations, I imbue the names and fragments of information inscribed on the tombstones with imaginary information of my own devising. There is nothing, I have found, to stimulate the imagination like a graveyard.

The most recent addition to the complete review is my review of Jean-Patrick Manchette's 1973 novel, No Room at the Morgue, the latest Manchette in translation from New York Review Books.
Always good to see more Manchette -- and there are a few more to go. Not to mention the nearly thousand-page Journal 1966-1974 -- see the Folio publicity page -- or what about the recently published 'chroniques ludiques' collection, Play it again, Dupont -- see the La Table Ronde publicity page .....

Isamu Yamamoto is 17 years old and has been one of the world’s best freestyle skateboarders for years — he won his first world championship in 2014 at the age of 11. He started skating because he saw a video of Rodney Mullen and now Mullen says of Yamamoto:

The way he links his tricks together and the speed of them — it’s beautiful to watch. I would dare say that not many could do that, in that way, if they tried

Mycelium is how fungi feed.  Some organisms — such as plants that photosynthesize — make their own food.  Some organisms — like most animals — find food in the world and put it inside their bodies, where it is digested and absorbed.  Fungi have a different strategy.  They digest the world where it is and then absorb it into their bodies…

The difference between animals and fungi is simple: Animals put food in their bodies, whereas fungi put their bodies in the food.

…to embed oneself is an irregular and unpredictable food supply as mycelium does, one must be able to shape-shift.  Mycelium is an living, growing, opportunistic investigation — speculation in bodily form.

That is from the new and excellent book by Merlin Sheldrake, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, & Shape Our Futures.
