Livin' the vinyl Gigs: New VR headset will feature "human eye resolution"

As BC notes just  because you're a man who reads Julia Kristeva doesn’t mean you're not sexist. In the arts, sexism is more often a failure of empathy than of understanding Darling of Darkest Harbours

How to stop digital transformation becoming a train wreck. You’ve seen the slide and bought the buzzwords. But here’s what they don’t tell you about going digital first

There are quite a few similarly titled articles that all directly and concisely state the facts about diversity in Google’s US workforce – it is overwhelmingly male and white – 70% of the more than 46,000 employees are male, and more than 62% are white males. The company’s current diversity report focuses on demographic areas listed as Overall, Tech, Non-tech, and Leadership.

Back in the old days when misinformation wasn't "so fashionable," Russian journalists fought a lonely fight against the Kremlin and its relative view of the truth. Here are some lessons the journalists learned.

New VR headset will feature "human eye resolution"

"So the next time you are tempted to make a snarky 'fake news' quip, instead look up the number of journalists who are killed every year in the quest for the truth. And maybe be big enough to admit that perhaps you simply do not like some of those truths." — Greg Milam, Sky News, in "Time to Spike the 'Fake News' Defence"

FutureTimeline.net, 19/6/17. Varjo, a tech startup based in Helsinki, Finland, has today unveiled a new VR/AR technology it has been developing in secret. This features nearly 70 times the pixel count of current generation headsets and is sufficient to match human eye resolution.

Well yes. Thomas Sowell and Theodore Dalrymple have been saying this for decades. As Sowell wrote in 2015, in a piece headlined, “The Inconvenient Truth about Ghetto Communities’ Social Breakdown,” “Such trends are not unique to blacks, nor even to the United States. The welfare state has led to remarkably similar trends among the white underclass in England over the same period. Just read [2001’s] Life at the Bottom, by Theodore Dalrymple, a British physician who worked in a hospital in a white slum neighborhood.”

Does Diversity Really Improve Creativity?

“Most studies assume that the relationship between diversity and creativity is linear, but recent evidencesuggests that a moderate degree of diversity is more beneficial than a higher dose. This finding is consistent with the too-much-of-a-good-thing paradigm in management science, which provides compelling evidence for the idea that even the most desirable qualities have a dark side if taken to the extreme. In other words, all things are good in moderation (except moderation).”

Data Driven Journalism: “Just because there’s a duty to disclose, doesn’t mean there’s a duty to make it easy. This seems to be a universally true when it comes to public records, regardless of the country or government making them available. The consequences for journalists can be profound: hours of time spent digging through messy data, missing stories that go untold, and the opportunity costs that come with these, just to name a few. This is a problem we set out to improve a couple of years ago in the US with the introduction of Sqoop, a free data journalism site intended to make it easier for reporters to find and track public records, starting with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Patent Office, and the federal court system, otherwise known as PACER (public access to court automated records). Think of it as a search box across all of these public records sites (and we’re working to add others) as well as a rapid alerting service. If a journalist has saved searches for “Facebook”, “Jeffrey P. Bezos”, or “Internet of Things”, she will receive email alerts every time these search terms show up in new public filings. Journalists can refine search results based on data source, form type, and geographic factors, and then save those searches as alerts…”
