Law and Order

The Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times sought records from the Cherokee County sheriff's office relating to the death of a jail inmate who died of diabetes after being denied emergency care, but the newly elected sheriff took office to find empty filing cabinets and computers wiped clean of all files except for operating programs. The former sheriff isn't talking, but state law requires that government documents be preserved after a change of office.
